Christmas Books: Twelve Quick Picks for Your Busy Holiday Season...And, Sharon's Advice for the Holidays!

Christmas Books: Quick Picks for your
busy holiday season.
Twelve Christmas Books:
Quick Picks for a Busy Season!

Book Review by
Sharon Powers.

     Welcome to this week's posting of Sharon's Love of Books. The books selected this week are a true potpourri. Some of the books I selected because they looked interesting, some I got for free from various e-book sources, some are classics, some are brand new stories. I give you these books in the hope that you take a few minutes for yourself during the holiday season to treat yourself. The books, for the most part, are short and you can easily devour them before Christmas. A few are good enough to be given as gifts to someone special. Let's take a look at the wide range of selections I've picked for your perusal and enjoyment.

You can purchase The
Christmas Bus by Melody
 Carlson from Amazon by
clicking on this link.
BOOK: The Christmas Bus by Melody Carlson. This little novella centers around Edith Ryan. Her adult children are not coming home for Christmas, so she opens her B&B (AKA, The Shepherd's Inn) up for Christmas reservations. The available rooms fill up and when a very pregnant Amy and her husband Collin show up there's no room left in the Inn. The couple's "Christmas Bus" breaks down outside the B&B and Edith and her other boarders take things in hand...what they didn't count on was trouble-making Myrtle (one of the boarders). The story is a sweet and modern re-telling of the birth of the Christ child and the joys and tribulations of Christmas.

I give this first book a thumbs up and rate it at 4.5 stars (out of 5). Currently it costs $3.99 (e-book), $6.00 (hardcover), and $1.55 (used); I got this book as a free Amazon download in October 2009. Amazon reviewers rated this 176 page novella 4.3 stars out of 5 (150 Reviewers). I found this story very enjoyable and if you only get one Christmas book this year, you couldn't do better than to select this one.

The Night Before
Christmas
 by Clement
Clark Moore.
ISBN: 1-40372-947-6
BOOK: The Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore. This widely-known and loved story about Father Christmas is a poem that was first published in 1823. It is the story about Santa Claus visiting a family with his pack of toys, going down the chimney and filling the children's stockings. As Santa and his eight reindeer leave, Santa wishes everyone a "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night." This lovely story has been beautifully presented in this book with Christmas fun facts (for example, about Christmas cards, trees, mistletoe, Virginia's Letter to the Editor of the New York Sun, and Santa sightings by "NORAD"), a "Naughty & Nice List," Christmas crafts, a cookie recipe, a passport, and the last page has a beautiful pop-up of Santa. Of course, the poem is included and is beautifully presented. This book is high in quality and would make a wonderful gift to any child as a Christmas keepsake...or, I might add, for the child inside us adults, too. My daughter gave me my copy and I have treasured it for many years!

I rate this book 5.0 stars out of 5. Many different versions of The Night Before Christmas exist. I recommend this verson--just click on the link to go to the Amazon website. Also, the Amazon Kindle Edition is free, but I recommend the hardcover edition for $8.00.

The Bite Before Christmas
by Jeaniene Frost
.
BOOK: The Bite Before Christmas by Lynsay Sands and Jeaniene Frost. This paranormal romance anthology showcases two popular series: Lynsay Sands, The Argeneau Family Series and Jeaniene Frost's, Night Huntress Series. The first novella, "The Gift," features a charming story about Teddy Brunswick, Police Chief of Port Henry. Teddy gets his own story after having been a supporting character in other Lynsay Sands novels. When Teddy's cabin gets snowed-in he meets a young, beautiful and neighbor whom he immediately feels attracted to. Will he be able to get past the fact that he is so much older than her...or is he really older than her?

"Home for the Holidays," the Jeaniene Frost's story, takes place after One Grave at a Time. Cat invites friends over to help celebrate Bones birthday and, of course, stay to be part of an old fashioned Christmas. Complications arise--and what would be a Night Huntress story without lots of violence?

I rate this book 4.0 stars out of 5. On Amazon, it is also rated 4.0 stars by 109 Reviewers. Currently, it costs $5.69 (e-book), $8.00 (hardcover), and $.73 (used mass market paperback). This book would be attractive to fans of the authors or series; this book is for readers of paranormal romance, with of course, the twist added: vampires at Christmas.

Christmas at Pebble Creek
by Vannetta Chapman
.
THE BOOK: Christmas at Pebble Creek by Vannetta Chapman. Christmas at Pebble Creek is a story about an Amish community and a young woman who must learn that God knows our needs even before we do and that we must trust that He will provide for those needs. Grace Miller, a teacher, goes through changes in her life, loss as well as joy before she finds her way.

This free, short e-romance (G-rated) also includes a few homey recipes for readers (like chicken and dumplings). I rate this book 3.0 stars out of 5. Amazon readers rate this book 4.2 out of 5 stars (79 Reviewers). While the story is sweet and centers on the Christmas season, characters are not fully developed and the story is really too short to get any kind of emotional involvement with the people in the book. If you like stories by Vannetta Chapmann or about the Amish, you will enjoy this sweet and simple story.

A Christmas Carol
by Charles Dickens.
BOOK: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. This story by Charles Dickens is the quintessential Christmas story. The story is about a cold, stingy, humbug of a man who is visited by three ghosts (the ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet To Come) who in the end change Scrooge's mind and heart about life and Christmas. The e-book edition is free for download from Amazon. Other versions of the story, in paperback may also be purchased ($5.85 for paperback at Amazon).

This heart-warming story is loved by many...why not grab this 112 page bargain book and read it yourself before Christmas? You have time...it is a short and easy read, and most of all you'll feel good after having read the delightful story. I rate this book 4.5 stars out of 5. Amazon readers rate this book 4.7 stars out of 5 (444 Reviewers).

Wolfsbane and Mistletoe
by Various Authors
(An Anthology).
BOOK: Wolfsbane and Mistletoe (An Anthology) by Various Authors. The themes of Christmas and werewolves are central to this popular anthology. At Amazon it receives a 4 star rating (out of 5), 71 customer reviews. I, too, rated this book at 4 stars out of 5. I was really surprised by this book, because, generally, I don't care for anthologies. This book was fairly well written and very enjoyable. I picked it up for a little light holiday reading in 2010, but think it is worth a look for anyone who likes werewolf stories. A number of very famous authors have contributed stories to this anthology.

The stories and authors included are as follows: Gift Wrap by Charlaine Harris; The Haire of the Beast by Donna Andrews; Lucy, at Christmastime by Simon R. Green; The Night Things Changed by Dana Cameron; The Werewolf Before Christmas by Kat Richardson; Fresh Meat by Alan Gordon; Il Est Ne by Carrie Vaughn; The Perfect Gift by Dana Stabenow; Christmas Past by Keri Arthur; SA by Joe Konrath; The Star of David by Patricia Briggs; You'd Better Not Pyout by Nancy Pickard; Rogue Elements by Karen Chance; Milk and Cookies by Rob Thurman; and, Keeping Watch Over His Flock by Toni L.P. Kelner.

The Gift of the Magi
by O. Henry.
BOOK: The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry. I have read this classic Christmas story quite a number of times, first reading it when I was in high school; I reread it again in preparation for doing this blog post. I have to tell you up front, I simply love this wonderful little Christmas story by O. Henry. The Magi were wise men who brought gifts to the Christ Child at his birth. The Magi in this story are the two characters on which the story focuses. If you haven't read this lovely story, do not wait. Run to your favorite book vendor, get it and devour it. I won't give away the punch line, but you will be touched by the married couple who struggle through difficult times and face Christmas with all the love in their hearts. The spirit of Christmas will fill your heart after you read this lovely little story. I rate this book 5 stars out of 5.

You can buy the story in paperback for about $3.50, and hard cover for about $12.29, but why do that? If you have an e-reader (i.e. a Kindle), you can get this lovely story for FREE! at Amazon (just follow the link under the book cover image). How about that? Get yourself something for free and use the money you save to buy a present for someone else, or even better...make a donation to a wonderful charity of your choice!

The Santa Society
by Kristine McCord.
BOOK: The Santa Society by Kristine McCord. This Christmas story is all about Christmas, but not as you know it. A secret society exists, its ranks filled by families belonging to the society. Santa is a . . .? Realtor? When the Realtor helps Erin to list her home for sale, he starts falling for her in a big way. It isn't long and Erin is immersed into the clandestine society and the Realtor's chaotic life. Along the way, Erin discovers secrets about her own family; who her father and grandfather were, and why violating the society's laws may spell the end to Christmas.

Oh, what a lovely, surprising story. Did I say it is a surprising story? Utterly, utterly charming and wonderful. I purchased this book for this Christmas season because I liked the title--I paid the grand total of $ . 99 for the book on Amazon. If you want something a little different for your Christmas reading, this book will fill the bill and leave you smiling at the end. I rate this book at 4.5 stars, Amazon readers rate it at 4.7 stars out of 5 (36 Reviewers).

The Christmas Lamp
by Lori Copeland.
BOOK: The Christmas Lamp by Lori Copeland. This Christmas quick pick is short and sweet, so you can read this little story post haste. Nativity, Missouri faces financial difficulties and is about to go under. A consultant is called in and immediately cancels all the town's Christmas celebrations angering everyone for his ending of the traditional events. Roni falls for Jake Brisco (consultant) and soon everyone is making the best of things and finding the true spirit of Christmas.

A good effort by the author, and I do love the cover art, but the abrupt love relationship between Roni and Jake was less than convincing. And, while it is always good to find the true meaning of Christmas, this story was just not as good as the others in this blog post. I rate this story 3.5 stars out of 5, Amazon readers rate it 3.7 out of 5 (20 Reviewers). I got this story for free from Amazon in 2009, but currently, the Kindle Ed. is listed for $7.99, the hardcover at $6.00 and audio edition at $13.95 from Audible.com.

The Christmas Contract
by Jan Romes.
BOOK: The Christmas Contract by Jan Romes. I purchased this Christmas book a couple weeks ago for this Christmas season. The premise surrounds a wealthy philanthropist who makes a contract with his granddaughters. He wants the young women to be married by Christmas (and no premarital sex). In turn, the triplets (Joy, Christi, and Noelle) will get the money they need to buy the restaurant they have been trying to buy. Three fabulous men fall for the beautiful trio, but just who are these hunky guys? Is there something else here that lies below the surface of the contract?

I am always looking for a bargain in books, and I got one here. I paid $.99 for the Kindle (e-book) version and loved that I saved dollars on the purchase. Something I loved even more was how surprised I was that the book was so good and the story so enjoyable. This is a quick read at only 146 pages...just long enough to enjoy without a huge time commitment.

Dark Hunter: An Insider's
Guide
 by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
BOOK: Dark Hunter: An Insider's Guide by Sherrilyn Kenyon: The focus story is Dark Hunter Christmas. Only one of the stories in this book is Christmas related, but I list it here, because I really LOVED the little story. The stand alone story is about Gallagher who has been suffering because of the loss of his family. He is morose and finds the holiday season sad and lonely. He leaves the party and wanders the streets, but soon Simi catches up with him and teaches him about the true meaning of love and family. I love the Simi.

My favorite quote from the book is as follows: [Simi tells Gallagher] "We have three kinds of family. Those we are born to, those who are born to us and those we let into our hearts. I have let you into my heart so the Simi is your family and she won't give you up. If you are sad right now then I'm thinking your family is still in your heart too and they are taking up so much room that you haven't any room for anyone else....[Then, Gallagher said,] 'I can't give them up.' [Simi replied,] 'And you shouldn't. Ever. No one should ever forget those they love. But your heart is an amazing thing. It can always expand to take in as many people as you need it to. The people who live there, they don't go away. It's kind of like a house. You just make room for one more person and then another and another and another....Somehow there's always space for more.'" [Kindle location 402 of 1074, Kindle Ed.]

Christmas on Main Street
by Multiple Authors
.
BOOK: Christmas on Main Street by Various Authors. An anthology of romance for those who can't spend a lot of time reading. You can chunk your reading, picking up one story at a time; of course, the other good thing is that the stories are all related to Christmas...who doesn't enjoy a little romance and love at Christmas time? I bought this Kindle e-book (with 11 stories) for $.99 before Thanksgiving in order to start my Christmas reading. Again, it is a bargain book, but who doesn't like saving money at Christmas time and still treating yourself at the same time?

The stories included are as follows: (1) The Christmas Wish by Tori Scott; (2) Her Christmas Cruise by Mona Risk; (3) A Snowy Christmas in Wyoming by E. Ayers; (4) The Christmas Con by Jill James; (5) Small Town Glamour Girl Christmas by Stephanie Queen; (6) The Christmas Gift by Pepper Phillips; (7) A Potters Wood Christmas by Leigh Morgan; (8) A Baby for Christmas by Susan R. Hughes; (9) A Light in the Christmas Cafe by Kristy Tate; (10) What if...this Christmas by Kelly Rae; (11) A Smoky Mountain Christmas by Carol De Vaney.

I rated this book 4.0 stars out of 5; Amazon readers rated the book 4.4 stars out of 5 (14 Reviewers). This book was published on November 15, 2013, so this book has only been out a little while.

SHARON'S UNSOLICITED ADVICE FOR CHRISTMAS:

Commitment to do one thing today.
1. Drive safely and courteously;

2. When you are out shopping, be patient and smile;

3. Give a donation of money or time to your favorite charity;

4. Exercise a bit every day, and don't over eat--you'll feel better for it (take care of yourself);

5. When asked what you want for Christmas, tell them you would like a donation in your name given to your favorite charity; and don't forget to keep your expectations for the holiday in check, you will be happier;

6. Forgive someone you've been harboring resentment towards--this, by the way, includes forgiving yourself for mistakes you've made;
7. Say a prayer or two for those less fortunate than you and think about and appreciate the good in your own life;
8. Take a little time for yourself and relax a bit--you'll be less likely to feel unappreciated or resentful;
9. Tell the people in your life that you love them, give them lots of hugs and tell them you appreciate them;
10. When you want to correct or criticize someone, DON'T (this may be hard, but is often the best thing you can do);
11. Give everyone you meet a little compliment--this little gift costs nothing and makes everyone feel better;
12. Don't forget to read a little something every day...your heart will be happier if you pick something inspiring.

Not everyone is happy at Christmas. Don't criticize, and
don't be judgmental...be patient and kind.
One last thing: Not everyone is happy at Christmas time or through the holidays. I know people who are ill and others who have lost family members...so, if someone looks glum, or doesn't respond to your smiles and holiday wishes, be kind and try to be understanding--don't be judgmental. You never know what another person is going through in their personal life; they may be suffering inside. Don't be offended if someone doesn't return your smiles and cheer, and don't say something you could regret later. Be as kind and patient as you can.

OK. It is time to wind this up. I hope you have enjoyed today's post about the twelve Christmas book quick picks; please join me next time for another book review. May your whole holiday season be joyous and filled with the true meaning of Christmas. I send you all the love my heart holds. I hope you find a little love for yourself down in your heart and remember that you are precious.

Until next time...
White Rose.
...many happy pages of reading!

Sharon.

Long Walk to Freedom, A Book Review: Dedication to Nelson Mandela: His Long Walk Ended

Nelson Mandela
   DEDICATION:  Nelson Mandela died today, Thursday, December 5, 2013, the anniversary of his arrest and detention (prefacing his 27 years in prison).   I dedicate my blog post, today, to a man of uncommon grace who dedicated his life to abolish apartheid and to lead South Africans to a life of freedom. He will be remembered for many wonderful qualities, none more important than forgiving his enemies and loving those who harmed him and his fellow countrymen. Nelson Mandela leaves behind a legacy of love, hope, and kindness. I am very sad today. I have long admired this wonderful man. My love and condolences to Nelson Mandela's family, friends, and to all who love him.

Long Walk to Freedom by
Nelson Mandela.
Book Review by
Sharon Powers.

[Note: This post has been updated with the new date for the upcoming movie (See below).]

  On February 11, 1990, I was having a won- derful day with my family and friends. We had a lovely dinner and watched a movie on the television. A while later, I turned on the television to watch the news and was surprised to see plastered all over all the networks, the news story that in South Africa, after twenty-seven years, Nelson Mandela had been released from prison. It was THE news of the day (and for many days that followed).

  Before February 11, 1990, we all watched the daily news on the network channels about what was happening in South Africa regarding its people and the struggle against apartheid. The news networks showed that apartheid was becoming increasingly unpopular and that demonstrations against apartheid were taking place in many different countries...virtually all over the world, and even in the U.S.
Demonstrators against apartheid,
here, the Coalition of Labor
Union Women.
In the United States demonstrators
had the rights of peaceful protest,
while in South Africa, peaceful pro-
testors would often be met with
gunfire and death.

THE BOOK:
   Well-known leader against apartheid and president of the African National Congress (ANC), Nelson Mandela, from his early days as a young man in South Africa, grew into a political leader and advocate for human rights and racial equality. In his autobiography, Nelson Mandela chronicles his days from his childhood until shortly after his release from prison...much of the book was secretly written while he was in prison.

In 1993, Nelson Mandela (on left) and F.W. de Klerk
(on right) receive the Nobel Peace Prize for their
shared roles in ending apartheid.
     Nelson Mandela describes how he grew in knowledge, sophistication, and experience and then seized opportunities to fight against apartheid. He describes how he championed the movement towards a multiracial government and majority rule.

     Gradually, Nelson Mandela grew in importance and stature to become internationally known and respected. Nowhere was he respected more, however, than in his beloved South Africa. After his freedom he became president of South Africa and won the Nobel Peace Prize for his lifelong struggle against racial oppression in South Africa. Nelson Mandela explains that the cost of the struggle was great; that even though he had won the hearts of his fellow countrymen and the respect of the world, the struggle had cost him his family. Nelson Mandela observed that, "When your life is the struggle, as mine was, there is little room left for family" [Kindle Location: 1077].

The Scarlet Pimpernel,
by Baroness Orczy.
     Long Walk to Freedom, is broken into eleven distinct sections. Nelson Mandela starts the book by describing his early upbringing in, A Country Childhood. In Part Two, he describes his young adult life in "Johannesburg." Part Three describes how Nelson Mandela became a freedom fighter in: "Birth of A Freedom Fighter." In Part four, Nelson Mandela describes how the struggle consumes his whole life in: "The Struggle is My Life." Part five describes the results of the prolonged court trial in, "Treason." Part Six describes Nelson Mandela's underground exploits as he flees the authorities: he was dubbed, "The Black Pimpernel," by the press because of his ability to evade the authorities, much as had "...Baroness Orczy's fictional character the Scarlet Pimpernel, who daringly evaded capture during the French Revolution" (Kindle Location: 4807).

Robben Island Jail Cell of Nelson Mandela.
     The latter half of the book consists of Part seven: "Rivonia," which, as Nelson Mandela puts it, is "...a bucolic northern suburb of Johannesburg." (Kindle Location: 5023); it is at this time that "The Black Pimpernel" is caught and the stage set for his term of imprisonment. Parts eight and nine are about Nelson Mandela's time on Robben Island: The Dark Years and Beginning to hope. Parts ten and eleven wind up the book in "Talking with the Enemy" and "Freedom."

THE MOVIE:
     Nelson Mandela's book, Long Walk to Freedom, has been made into a feature film, due to be released  CHRISTMAS DAY, December 25, 2013. I have for your enjoyment, this trailer from YouTube about the upcoming movie. The director is Justin Chadwick; the writer, William Nicholson (screenplay), the actors cast in the movie are as follows: Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela, Naomie Harris as Winnie Mandela, Tony Kgoroge as Walter Sisulu, Deon Lotz as Kobie Coetzee, Terry Pheto as Evelyn, Lindiwe Matxhikiza as Zindzi Mandela, Jamie Bartlett as James Gregory, and Riaad Moosa as Ahmed Kathrada.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT THE BOOK:
Amnesty International.
     First, I like that Nelson Mandela writes about his failures as well as his successes and addresses negative viewpoints as well as the positive ones. For example, he recognizes that many people disagreed with his eventual acceptance of violence to further the ANC cause. He states that even "...Amnesty International would not campaign for us on the grounds that we had pursued an armed struggle, and their organization would not represent anyone who had embraced violence....[And,] for that reason that I assumed the Nobel committee would never consider [that kind of] man...for the peace prize" [Kindle location 10988].

Poster for the movie:
Long Walk to Freedom.
     Admitting faults, flaws, and negative attributes are difficult for anyone. Doing so, obviously, makes you a target for potential criticism. And, even if you are a strong person, as Nelson Mandela certainly is, it would take an incredible amount of fortitude to be so frank. This fact alone makes me admire the forthrightness with which Nelson Mandela writes his book.

     Second, Nelson Mandela shows us, repeatedly, that he is like any other man with his loves and hates, foibles and strengths, and his misgivings and doubts. We also get to see how different he is from the average person in his attitudes toward reconciliation, belief in the innate goodness of others, and his unwavering fortitude in the face of adversity. Somehow, Nelson Mandela embraces that dichotomy and is able to straddle the gap and convincingly portray his own dual nature.

at the end of the book.
     Third, something I didn't like about the book. Nelson Mandela lists name after name, meeting after meeting, location after location, to the extent that it seemed to detract from the story, at times. I would have liked to have seen some of the factual information presented put into end notes in the book. I found this criticism to be especially true in the middle third of the book where he is relating his growth as a political person and the endless meetings he attended.

    I recognize that it is important to document the factual information necessary in such a complex and important autobiography, just...I would have preferred some of the factual information to be placed as end notes. It just got a bit dry in the middle of the book. This may not be true for you if you love politics and like to hear about the details of numerous meetings, however. Just saying...for me it was a bit dry in the middle of the book.

The yard on Robben Island where the prisoners, including
Nelson Mandela, broke rocks with a hammer all day long.
This is one of the 47 photographs included (at the back of
the book) in Long Walk to Freedom.
     Fourth, something I really loved! One of the things we all want to know is how did Nelson Mandela come out of twenty-seven years of prison and not be filled with hatred. In several places in the book, he talks about how he was able to deal with being in prison. In fact, Nelson Mandela says that his anger towards "the whites" actually decreased while his hatred for "the system" grew.

     Emphasizing this attitude, Nelson Mandela said that he wanted "...South Africa to see that [he] loved even [his] enemies while [he] hated the system that turned us against one another" He acknowledges a practical side to this attitude, too, saying that the he didn't "...want to destroy the country before we freed it, and to drive the whites away would devastate the nation" [Kindle location 10187].
    A number of beautiful examples, in the book, relate his attitude of not hating: the story of the abusive prison guard, and one about the stern prison commander; even in the stories about factions among the other prisoners, we can see Nelson Mandela's thoughtfulness, love and practicality. These are the parts I liked best in the book...the parts where I, as a reader, got to see the intelligent humanity of Nelson Mandela.

MY FAVORITE QUOTE:
     Today, I have two quotes because I just could not settle on one. Nelson Mandela said, "I always knew that deep down in every human heart, there is mercy and generosity...[and that] [e]ven in the grimmest times in prison, when my comrades and I were pushed to our limits, I would see a glimmer of humanity in one of the guards...enough to reassure me and keep me going" [Kindle Location 11191]. So, that having been said, here is my favorite quote, again, from Kindle location 11191, with no further explanation needed:

So many beautiful, wonderful quotes exist in this book, Long Walk to Freedom. I had such
a difficult time selecting only one...alas, I could only narrow it down to two; so, here is the
first quote and the second quote is related to it, just below.

MY SECOND FAVORITE QUOTE:
When I walked out of prison, that was my mission, to liberate the oppressed and the oppressor both. Some say that has now been achieved. But I know that that is not the case. The truth is that we are not yet free; we have merely achieved the freedom to be free, the right not to be oppressed. We have not taken the final step of our journey, but the first step on a longer and even more difficult road. For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others...I have walked that long road to freedom...But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb...I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended. [Kindle location 11231].

     I LOVE THIS QUOTE! I am so glad to see Nelson Mandela's "mission" (not just his "goal") was to liberate both, the oppressed peoples as well as the oppressor. That Nelson Mandela can see that the oppressor also needs to be freed shows just how aware he is of the chains that bind all of us. Here, he acknowledges, not that they have won the struggle to deconstruct the apartheid regime, but that now that apartheid as a policy is demolished, the struggle must begin to erase racism from the hearts and minds of the people, as well. Beautiful, just beautiful! Now, only after finishing reading the book, can I truly appreciate the meaning behind the title. I love that the title to the book was chosen from this section of text. Just amazing.

MY RATING AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THIS BOOK: I find this book easy to rate. I loved the book and warmly recommend that everyone should read it. This book easily rates four stars.
Four Stars out of five.

Book Review by: Sharon Powers.

     The real-life story of the Forty-Seven Ronin took place in Japan in the early days of the Eighteenth Century. The legend of the 47 Ronin is a well-known story about the samurai and their code of honor, called bushidō. This story exalts the loyalty, sacrifice, honor and dogged persistence and patience of this famous group of men.

     The Forty-Seven lost their "daimyo" (feudal lord), Asano Naganori, when the lord was compelled to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) for the offense of assaulting a court official (Kira Yoshinaka). Without a leader, the 47 became "Ronin" (wandering Samurai who have no daimyo/feudal lord).

     In real life, the Ronin waited and planned their revenge for two years before the 47 were able to avenge their lord by killing the court official. In turn, the 47 were required to commit "seppuku." The graves of the 47 have been preserved with honor at Sengakuji Temple, Japan.

The grave site of the 47 Ronin, Sengakuji Temple, Japan.
     Since the time of 47 Ronin, various stories and fictionalized accounts have been told about leaderless men. The Japanese call these accounts Chūshingura; these accounts were made into innumerable plays (call- ed bunraku and kabuki). A festival to honor the 47 Ronin is held every year at Sengakuji Temple, in Japan, on December 14th.

     Numerous books have chronicled the story of the 47 Ronin. The book I review for you, today, is one of the newest, having been released on November 26, 2013. This particular version or story about the 47 Ronin is one which will come to theaters on Christmas Day, 2013.

THE BOOK--THE 47 RONIN:
      Kai, at the beginning of the book, is rescued by Lord Asano, and brought to live with him in his village. But Kai's past is mysterious and murky, and everyone doubts him and looks down on him as a mongrel and a half-breed.

     In this fictionalized version of the story about the 47 Ronin, Kai's standing causes him to live as an outcast in society, as "half-breed," one that is suspected of being a demon. At one point, Kai is even disciplined as "...Lord Asano's disobedient freak of nature...." [Kindle location 2106, 30%] As Kai grows up in the village, he is befriended by Lady Mika (Asano) and falls in love with her. His love is one that is hopeless and his pining is futile since Kai really has no place in society, nothing to offer Mika, and no standing to be able to claim the woman of his dreams.

Samurai Sword. The Samurai believe
their soul resides within the sword. In
the book, when their swords are taken
from the Samurai after surrendering,
they feel as if they have lost everything.
     In spite of all these limitations, Kai eventually joins the 47 warriors, led by Oishi, the leader of the men. The 47 want to seek revenge on the treacherous overlord who killed their beloved lord, Asano Naganori (fa-ther of the beautiful Lady Mika). The Overlord's murder of Lord Asano was an act that left the group of 47 warriors banished. The banished Ronin follow a series of trials and tribulations, seeking to overcome hardships and working to restore their honor.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT THE BOOK:
The 47 Ronin signing their pact. The story is so popular that it has
appeared in comic book format. Another form in which the
famous story has appeared is the graphic novel.
     One of the most evocative parts of the book arises as Kai, in an attempt to save the honor of the Asano clan, conceals himself in the armour of Yasuno (who is knocked out and cannot do battle). His identity concealed, Kai enters the tournament arena to fight a "...giant in black armor..." whom he can see has demon eyes of "sulfer-yellow." After a long battle, Kai is defeated and his identity revealed when his helmet is knocked off his head--it is then that the Shogun orders Kai to be killed. In begging for the life of Kai, Lady Mika throws "...away her honor, disgracing her father's good name...." The Shogun commutes the sentence to a brutal beating.

One of the characters in Joan D. Vinge's book, 47 Ronin, is the man
with the tattoos on his body
. His tattoos made him look like a skeleton with
muscles, ligaments, etc. This man, a gaijin (an untrustworthy stranger), was
one of the men on the Dutch Island (traders). Oishi meets this man
when he goes to the island to rescue Kai from the Dutch traders.
     What follows the scenes of Kai's, Mika's, and Lord Asano's disgrace before the Shogun, is a wonderful interplay of family dynamics. Mika goes to her father and tries to apologize, he refuses and walks away from her pleading with him, calling out to him. He gives her his back in silence, lost in pain of his own. "...Lord Asano had been humbled in the dirt at the Shogun's feet, because..." of his daughter's public display. [Kindle Location 2064] The scene is heartrending.

     Also taking place after Kai's beating, is a sweet scene with Basho and Lady Miko. Later, after Kai had been taken to be treated, Basho went to find Lady Miko. Basho told her, "...you speak...like someone born with the sacred words of Buddha inscribed on her heart. Buddha once said, 'Radiate your loving-kindness to every living being without discrimination.' In the end the kindnesses we offer, and the kindnesses we take into our hearts, are all that remain with our souls...[Kai's life and yours] will be a better one, for having shared your kindness." [Kindle Location 2166] Basho is one of my favorite characters in the book--he was a monk and left that life to be Samurai. But it seems to me he still lives the life of a Bhuddist monk by the way he treats everyone.

A scene from the movie where Oishi (in the front) has surrendered
his sword to the Shogun. The other Samurai are following suit. Oishi
does this to prevent the other Samurai, the villagers, and Lady Miko
from being killed. This scene is just before they become Ronin.
     The story of the 47 Ronin, as stated above, is based on the "real life" account of the 47 Ronin. In this fictionalized version, it includes magical creatures and even demons. Joan D. Vinge seems to utilize these elements to show how the Japanese people of that era viewed demons, ghosts, and the outcast half-blooded people. It also seems to show the influences from all manner of legends, historical influences, and even the influences of social standing. Including these fantasy-like elements helps make the book better by placing the reader within the mindset of the people of the era...in an odd way it makes it more convincing.

The Samurai and Bushido.

MY FAVORITE QUOTE:
Bushido was a roadmap: something meant to show a man the way home, after he had been in the wilderness too long; to guide a warrior back to his humanity, to help him remember which things were really worth fighting for, and how to live in peace again. A map was a reminder that even a sheet of paper had two sides. Justice and valor, courage and compassion, courtesy respect, honesty, loyalty ... honor. Those described an enlightened being--or one who came close to enlightenment [Kindle Location 6854].
     My favorite quote from this book is about the attributes a Samurai strives to live every day. It was the code that the 47 Ronin held to in avenging their Lord's death. It was the code they lived, in holding on to each other, friendship, and the duty to make things right. I like this quote because it shows that the Ronin weren't just out for blood, for vengeance. They were living the code of Bushido and dedicated to make things right for their Lord, Lady Mika, the villagers, and even themselves. It is a beautiful description of their code.

     The movie of the 47 Ronin is scheduled for release on December 25, 2013. I will certainly be joining my family, and undoubtedly, many other people to see this exciting movie. I hope the movie is as good as the book, for I enjoyed it thoroughly!

MY RATING FOR THIS BOOK: This book was a fun read and I have to say I very much enjoyed the book. Having read and enjoyed the book so much, I understand why they picked Joan D. Vinge's version of the 47 Ronin to make into a movie. I only hope the movie is as good as the book. It was an easy book to rate and it easily earned its four star rating.
